The Costikyan Carpet Workroom is where carpets and rugs are fabricated, restored, prepared, and finished before installation. This page offers an inside look at the processes, techniques, and standards used by our craftsmen so clients, designers, and partners can better understand how each piece is handled with care, accuracy, and respect for its construction.
Our custom templating process removes guesswork and ensures every carpet and rug fits with precision. Detailed measurements, thoughtful layout planning, and fabrication-ready templates support accurate cutting, clean installation, and long-term performance.
For complex projects, detailed CAD/CAM layouts define dimensions, seams, borders, and transitions before fabrication begins—resulting in cleaner fabrication and smoother installation.
State-of-the-art CAD/CAM and AutoCAD layouts capture exact dimensions, square footage, and shapes.
Floor plans are engineered with optimized seam placement, borders, transitions, and stair layouts.
Full-size, mill- and factory-ready templates so custom rugs and carpets are fabricated exactly as specified.
Expert wall-to-wall and area rug installation, including delivery, trimming, seaming, and rug pads.
Restoration rooted in tradition & technique
Reviving structural integrity and visual authenticity, our hand repair process involves careful consideration of the rug’s age, origin, materials, and construction to ensure the best results possible.
Services range from fringe stabilization and replacement to in-depth reweaving of worn areas, holes, tears, and edge damage. Using hand-dyed wool and silk matched to the original colors and knot structure, repairs are executed to integrate seamlessly with the existing design while maintaining the rug’s character and value.
Unlike machine repairs, hand repair respects the original craftsmanship of the rug, allowing restored areas to age naturally alongside the surrounding fibers. This meticulous process not only improves appearance but also prevents further deterioration, extending the life of the rug for generations.
Preserve your rug’s proper shape & structure
If your new or antique rugs are out of square or wrinkled, ensure they maintain their proper shape and structure through a process called “blocking.”
Blocking a rug involves turning it over, making it as square and flat as possible, and fastening it down along the edges with hundreds of tiny, hand-laid nails. A mixture of sizing and water is sprinkled over the back of the rug, and the rug is allowed to dry under climate-controlled conditions.
The moisture in the sizing helps equalize tension in the foundation of the rug, and the sizing helps the rug hold its square, flat shape.
Even a good quality rug is rarely perfectly rectilinear; the choice is sometimes between getting it flat or making it square. In gauging what’s good for the rug, it is almost always better to make the rug flat than to make it perfectly rectilinear.
An elegant finish that completes the rug
A serged edge is a continuous wrap of yarn that binds and protects the perimeter of a rug. This finish reinforces the edge while maintaining a clean, tailored appearance that complements the rug’s original design.
The finished width is approximately 3/8 inch. Serging may be applied by hand or machine, depending on the rug’s origin, construction, and intended use. Hand serging is often selected for antique or handmade rugs to preserve authenticity, while machine serging provides a durable, consistent finish for contemporary and high-traffic pieces.
Properly executed serging helps prevent edge fraying, unraveling, and premature wear, extending the life of the rug while preserving its visual integrity.
A tailored, classic finish
Most standard carpet binding is folded over the edge of a rug and stitched on with a binding machine that is similar to a commercial sewing machine.
The colors are generally matched close to the field color of the rug, so the edge is not noticeable, just finished nicely. Binding gives a rug more of a tailored look, a classic or elegant finish.
High-quality rug pads provide essential support beneath every rug—protecting floors, improving comfort, reducing movement, and extending the life of your carpet. Costikyan offers carefully selected premium padding options, custom-cut to fit each rug and flooring surface.

A low-profile, non-slip rug pad engineered for maximum grip and long-term performance.
Material: Needle-punched synthetic fiber with a natural latex rubber backing.
Application: Area rugs on hard floors where slip resistance and a slimmer profile are preferred.
Thickness: 1/8″
Benefits: Keeps rugs firmly in place without adding bulk. Constructed from chemically inert materials that will not decompose, outgas, or contribute to allergies.
OUR 6-STEP PROCESS
For comprehensive deep cleanings, we do all the heavy lifting, handling everything from pickup to delivery with white glove precision and discretion.
Our experts use tried & true techniques and state-of-the-art equipment to ensure your fine carpets and rugs look better than ever.
STEP 1
Before we begin, all pre-cleaning issues and problem areas are recorded, guiding us in the creation of a custom cleaning plan and all necessary work orders.
STEP 2
Our industrial duster machine is used to remove embedded dust particles and any loose debris trapped deep in the pile of the rugs. This critical dry-soil removal step loosens and extracts abrasive grit that traditional vacuuming cannot reach, preventing unnecessary wear during the wet-cleaning process and allowing for a more effective wash.
STEP 3
Rugs are machine washed while fully submerged in a water bath, using professional-grade solutions and industrial extraction to remove soil, residues, and contaminants from both the surface fibers and foundation.
STEP 4
After washing, rugs are placed in a high-speed centrifuge to safely and efficiently remove 90% of water. This process extracts moisture without stressing the fibers or foundation, significantly reducing drying time while minimizing the risk of dye migration, shrinkage, or distortion.
STEP 5
Rugs are suspended in a climate-controlled dry room. After drying, they are evaluated to determine whether additional cleaning is required. If needed, the process is repeated to ensure optimal results.
STEP 6
All carpets are inspected by a member of the Costikyan family prior to delivery back to our clients.
